Mayor Bob's
Nomination
Four scores
and seven years ago… Oh my god I’m sorry wrong speech.
I am here
today as the daughter of the Mayor as well as a resident of Prospect, CT and a
member of the Republican Town committee.
As we all
know Mayor Robert J. Chatfield of Prospect has achieved a lot over the past
thirty years in office as the Mayor. He’s also the longest serving chief elected
official in Connecticut. Not only is he a dedicated man to the town and the
Prospect Volunteer Fire Department he’s a dedicated husband and father.
Some of the
examples of his achievements and accomplishments are: building the new Senior
center that we are standing in tonight, supporting the build of the new high
school for Region 16, and the library across the street just to name a few.
With the state’s help in funding a numerous amount of grants have been
approved. Along with the Mayor’s help he was able to put in water lines through
out the town, add pump stations, a water tank and buy the land for Kaplan Park.
Since the water lines were installed this has helped many businesses with there
fire insurance polices. The policies have gone down dramatically because many
fire hydrants were put through out the town and industrial park. Also with the
grant money the Mayor was able to purchase some of the property around the green
such as the Grange and next to the library.
If you ever need to get a hold of
Mayor Bob you can usually find him at 3 places (in this order), Town hall, the
firehouse, the Prospect Diary bar – well let’s make it 4 places. With the 4th
being his home. He is up around town at 6 AM in the morning. Now may I remind
you that his office opens at 8:00 am, but Mayor Bob starts his day long before
that hour. We all know that he goes to Doyon’s Mobil for a can of coke, oatmeal
cookies and lotto tickets. From there he takes a ride through the streets to
just check up on things. If there is any construction sites or roads being
paved, he stops there as well with his hard hat in tow. Around 7 AM he makes
his way to the Prospect Post office were he picks up the mail for town hall! He
then heads out to Long River Middle School to talk with Mr. Ross for a friendly
chat and to see if there are any pending issues. By then he heads to town hall
for the official day to begin which I may remind you is at 8 AM.
Everyone may think that he sits as
his desk listening to the Patton CD, but this is not true. He is on many
committee’s that the governor has appointed him too. Such as N.E.F.F.C.
(Northeast Forest Fire Compact), which is made up of all New England and 3
providences of Canada. He’s on the State Fire Commission, P.O.S.T (Police
Officer Stand and Training Counsel). He was the former Chairman of Bristol
Resources and Recovery and Counsel of Governments. He will go to these meetings
through out the state for these different committee’s that he is on. Now this
all can happen in one day or even morning. But he still makes it back in time
to each lunch at 11:30 AM sharp! By the afternoon he is retuning his calls. Or
gearing up for other meetings with fellow co-workers and sneaking in a ride to
re-check the construction sites or roads. When town hall closes at 4 PM he just
doesn’t stop being Mayor. He goes to town council meetings, weekly board
meetings and sometimes will have enough time to eat dinner with his family. If
someone calls with any problems after 4PM, they will contact his residence.
Which then in return he sometimes leaves to address the concerns or as simple as
opening a door for a meeting to be held.
Through out the summer he runs many
events to get the community involved. The Sock hop on the green is probably one
of the biggest events, which happens to be the last weekend in August. Over 600
old cars show up every year along with the crowds. With a live band and great
food, why not stop by. He also holds summer fun week for the kids before they
go back to school. And at the end of the week each child receives a surprise
from Mayor Bob himself. And let’s not forget the seniors with the Andy Nichols
concert on the green.
It’s funny – when I was young and
the bus driver would drop me off at my parent’s house and the younger kids would
say - That’s cool that Mayor Bob is at your house visiting. I would laugh and
say he’s my dad. And they would say ok – but doesn’t he sleep at town hall he’s
always there??!! Yes he is always there, that’s what makes him the great Mayor
that he is today.
He is my hero and probably is
someone else’s as well. Mayor Bob has proven over the past 30 years that he
stands behind his family, co-workers, kids and his town’s people. He
takes pride, time and effort to listen to what the people have to say and will
work to make things right if they are wrong.
After living at home over the past
20 years, many suppers, vacations and holidays have been interrupted with the
town’s business. I have shared my father with the this town for the past 27
years of my life and tonight I’m asking you the committee to back my father for
another 2 years. He is a strong willed, caring, devoted, and loving man. And
his own quote “town knowledge second to none.” With all this being said I would
like to nominate Mayor Robert J. Chatfield for his sixteenth term for the Town
of Prospect.
